Early in his career, Chan was groomed by producer Lo Wei as Bruce Lee's heir apparent but, after various failed attempts, Lo Wei granted Chan creative control over his next project.

Half a Loaf of Kung Fu is the first film over which Jackie Chan had substantial creative control. The film spoofed previous action films by making the protagonist an inept wannabe instead of an experienced fighter. Lo Wei was unimpressed with the film and shelved it. After Chan became a star with Drunken Master and Snake in Eagle's Shadow, Half a Loaf of Kung Fu was released.
